Team Building can mean different things for different people. Essentially, team building means bringing together a group of scattered individuals into a cohesive group (team). This group, thus organised, works together interdependently to achieve the desired/given goal. When talking about organisations (companies and multinationals), team building is the collective term used for varied activities which is used to improve the social interactions between the contributing employees. These collaborative tasks, called team building activities, leads to greater employee engagement, in turn resulting in improved work performance.

To sum up team building in a sentence:

Structured activity and exercises involving metamorphosis of a group of contributing individual employees into a coherent team. Such team is organised to work interdependently, and cooperatively to achieve the target.

Us human beings have an inherent need for appreciation, and when we get our due, we strive to perform exceptionally well.

Team Building activities incorporates such varied tasks that motivates the employees and enables them to execute the work and goals of the organisation more efficaciously. This is a win-win situation for both the employee and the company. However, just organising the employees in a group and assigning them activities to perform doesn’t really help. The most important element for team building exercise and employee engagement is fun.

Why Go For Team Building Activities?

1. Increased Communication

The group members who perform the team building activities together get acquainted with each other’s strengths, weaknesses and interests. This understanding is vital for the organisation as employees learn to work together in a much efficient way, putting each member’s strengths to the best use in the future progress of the company.

3. Fostering Creativity

The team building activities involve fun games which requires the entire group to come together and put on their most creative hat to win the game. When the employees find it fun and rewarding to think creatively, they unconsciously start applying the same creative to their office tasks.

The competitive streak to win is engraved in each of us. Every individual working together in a team strive towards wining and the one who ultimately does, is of course, up for some rewards and celebrations. This leads them to want to win even more to celebrate more in future. Plus, as an added advantage, the entire day of outing and fun is a good break from the monotonous work schedule.
